West Chester University
Brinjac provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, telecommunication, audio/visual, security, and lighting engineering design services for a new 90,000 SF, five-story Business and Public Management Center. The facility includes classrooms, a lecture hall, computer labs, and administrative offices/conference rooms. The project received LEED Gold Certification.
Design features include classrooms/conference rooms with complete multimedia audio/visual systems; energy and water efficient HVAC and plumbing systems, and daylighting controls. The building is cooled and heated by means of water source heat pumps that reject heat to and take heat from the campus geo-thermal loop. The A/V system was designed for small and large group instruction areas utilizing Crestron digital based controls for AV source switching, podiums, sound reinforcement, collaboration, video conferencing and distance learning interface.
The fire protection systems designed for the building include a complete automatic sprinkler system, a manual wet standpipe system, and an addressable voice fire alarm system. The automatic wet sprinkler system is designed in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 13. The sprinkler system is supplied by a single fire water service with an electric fire pump. An addressable voice fire alarm system is designed to provide audible and visible notification throughout the building in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 72. The fire alarm system is designed to contact the Public Safety Dispatch Center over the University’s fiber network.
Digital lighting controls integrate occupancy, vacancy and daylight sensors to the building’s AV and HVAC systems to provide the ultimate in control by allowing each individual fixture to be dimmed independently. Maintenance is made easy by automated reporting from the control system and the fact that only four lamp types were used on the entire project.
