Mt. Carmel WWTP

Mt. Carmel Township, PA

The Mount Carmel wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Mount Carmel Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania receives wastewater flows from the Mount Carmel Borough and Mount Carmel Township. The facility is owned and operated by the Mount Carmel Municipal Authority. The WWTP provides secondary treatment utilizing the contact stabilization process, and has a permitted design hydraulic capacity of 1.50 million gallons per day (MGD). The treated wastewater is discharged into the Shamokin Creek.

Considering the future growth in the Mount Carmel service area and anticipated hydraulic and organic loads to the WWTP, the Act 537 Official Sewage Facilities Plan prepared for Mount Carmel recommended expansion of the plant. The proposed design capacity will be 2.25 MGD average daily flow of wastewater. The WWTP will use Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBRs) with Intermittent Cycle Extended Aeration System (ICEAS). The major unit operations and processes will include coarse and fine screening, pumping of influent wastewater, grit removal, ICEAS SBRs, Ultra-Violet (UV) disinfection, and an outfall to Shamokin Creek.
